CalFresh is federally known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). CalFresh helps low-income individuals/households purchase nutritious food at authorized grocery stores and other retailers. Alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, pet food, paper products, vitamins, medicines, and other non-food items cannot be purchased.
Proof of Citizenship or Residency is required. All U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Resident children may qualify to receive CalFresh benefits, regardless of where the parents were born.
CalFresh benefits are issued on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card which looks like any other credit card. The benefit amount is based on number of individuals in household, income, expenses, and other factors pertinent to program guidelines.
