Mobile County Department of Human Resources (DHR) - Food Stamps, Public Assistance and JOBS Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Alabama is administered by the Food Assistance Division. Its purpose is to provide monthly benefits to low-income families/households so that they can purchase nutritious food at authorized grocery stores, farmers' markets and other retailers.

Individuals must apply for the SNAP program. An application must be filled out and all supporting documentation must be provided. When approved, SNAP benefits are issued monthly and put on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which looks just like a credit card. The benefit amount depends on number of individuals in household, income, expenses, and other factors pertinent to program guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Provide names for all individuals living in household
  • Provide proof of residence
  • Provide social security numbers
  • Provide proof of Citizenship and/or Alien Status
  • Provide proof of income, and expenses
  • Provide additional information as required

Special Note:

The Alabama Elderly Simplified Application Project (AESAP) is an application process for households where all the members are 60 years of age or older and have no earned income.

I recently moved to Alabama. I’ve called everyday since I got the first phone call from the first woman. She called me one time and I called back seconds later and she didn’t answer. Said I had to call the facility (which I can never get anyone on the phone) When I finally got someone on the phone last Friday she said someone will call didn’t say when or even what time. The other lady called twice and I’ve been calling since Monday on hold for hours at a time. Yes I call during work hours but call volumes are always “high”. Not to mention the first woman to call me and the one I finally got on the phone with Friday had horrible attitudes. Yes I need the assistance because I currently can’t work and my husband is the only one with a job. But y’all need to give people a day and time that y’all can call or something. Not everyone is on their phones all day everyday and we have kids to take care of. As far as the attitude is concerned if you don’t like your job then you should choose a different one.

What's the point of having a number to call and they don't NEVER answer the phone! Been calling and holding the phone for a hour everyday for the past 2 weeks and have yet spoken to anyone about my case. I have been getting the run around since October from my case. All the information requested from me has been turned in and I still haven't received my snap benefits. This is a disgrace!

I lost my card a almost 2 months ago so I reported bit lost/stolen they told me it would be here in a week or so. I waited a month and called them , they told me it probably got lost in the mail so ordered a 2nd replacement card and it's still not here.. can somebody please tell me what to do? I been emailing them and all they can say is "please wait.." when online , it's by law it's mailed to you in 5-7 business days , it's been almost 2 months.

I received ONE call, the worker did NOT even leave a FULL message to say WHY she was calling & did NOT even leave a phone# to contact her back at. I guess these workers don't know how to conduct a professional & courteous phone call or even know how to leave an appropriate phone message. She just said "This is the Food stamp office calling for_________" and then ended the call without stating WHY she was calling. I was on another phone call & when I tried to call back, I was forced to contact the Customer Service line which was NEVER answered, no matter what TIME I tried to call. I cannot sit on HOLD all day long! I fully believe that this phone number is BLOCKED out to where NOBODY from the general public can actually get through no matter WHEN they may call! If so, that is NOT even LEGAL to be doing it that way to start with. I also tried to get a status update & your system did not give the info out & ENDED the call! The phone system does NOT work no matter what "option" you try! This is the WORST excuse for a government office I have had the displeasure to deal with! Your staff needs to be properly trained, always be COURTEOUS & professional in how they may speak with anyone they are on the phone with, & make more than ONE attempt to reach someone trying to either APPLY or be Re INSTATED for EBT benefits which are BADLY needed for Mobile County areas until further notice.

Who do I need to speak to about mobile dhr food stamp office? I went into their office and asked how do I access my online account what's my online pin and they said we cannot help you with that and then gave me verification letters both incorrect amounts of income rent was wrong even the household number is completely wrong. I asked them how do we fix that, can you fix that, and they denied helping me, told me there's nothing you can do about that so I'm getting wrong amount of food stamps and everything on my case entirely wrong and nobody will help me at that office, even asked for a supervisor and was denied so I don't see the point of reporting anything anyways if it's gonna all be WRONG AND NOBODY WILL HELP ME AT THAT OFFICE. I DONT SEE WHY THEY EVEN HAVE A OFFICE. THEY HAVE NOT HELPED ANYBODY WALKED IN THERE I SEEN IT WITH MY OWN EYES ALL THEY DO IS SAY THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO THAT'S ALL WE HAVE. THEY ONLY PRINT OUT FORMS WRONG INFORMATION AND SEND YOU ON YOUR WAY.
