Onondaga County DSS Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is a federally funded program that assists low-income households purchase nutritious food at authorized grocery stores and other retailers. Individuals must apply for this program and provide all the required documentation.  If approved, recipients receive an electronic benefit card (EBT), which is similar to a debit card. The SNAP benefit is provided monthly directly into the EBT card. Amount of SNAP benefit is based on household size, income and other factors.


Eligibility:

  • Based on household size, income and other factors.

As part of the eligibility process you need to provide proof of the following:   

  • Identification/Citizenship or Alien Status   
  • Income for all household members who live and eat with you (This includes income from wages, and  unearned income sources such as unemployment benefits, child support, social security benefits, etc.)   
  • Address and shelter expenses (Proof of how much rent/mortgage you pay, property and school taxes, home owners insurance, etc.)   
  • Heating Costs (Proof of what type of fuel you use to heat your home)   
  • Student Status ( Required for students age 16 and older)   
  • Dependent Care Expenses (Proof of how much you pay for day care)  

Benefits:

  • SNAP benefits can help individuals put healthy food on the table.
  • SNAP monthly benefits can be used to purchase food at authorized retail food stores.
  • SNAP benefits are provided through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, similar to a bank debit card or credit card.

If individuals are eligible, an EBT account is set up, and every month the benefits will be deposited right into that account.

    I want to close my snap benefit case now. I found a job and no longer need snap.

    I am assisting a friend who is a senior. She is recovering from a broken hip. Am I allowed to use her SNAP CARD when I grocery shop for her? Thank You.

    Trying to respond to tele messages for my disabled adult son's recertification for SNAP when I call 435-2700, there are no clear instructions as to how to reach the SNAP office. I am uneducated; I have my master's degree and cannot be the only one that cannot access your office with the present prompts.
