    The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) assists low-income individuals and/or families to buy nutritious food.SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase alcoholic beverages, pet food, tobacco, paper products, or other nonfood items. The amount of benefits depends on household size, income, monthly expenses, and other criteria.

    Upon approval, the benefit amount is placed in an EBT card, which is just like a debit card. EBT cards are sent to approved recipients via U.S. mail. EBT cards can be used at authorized grocery stores and other retailers.
