    The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as the meal voucher program, provides monthly benefits that help low-income families buy the food they need for good health.
    SNAP is a federal program run locally by the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
    Nationally, SNAP is the largest program in the national hunger safety net.
    SNAPs are intended to be a supplement to one's income to help ensure that nutritional needs are met.
    Residents in Mississippi facing food insecurity have been urged to apply for the program.
    Help is available for those who are struggling to put food on the table.


    Those eligible for SNAP include:

    •  Low wages.
    •  Unemployment or part-time work
    •  Receiving TANF, SSI or other assistance
    •  Elderly or disabled, living on a small income

    The use of a SNAP screening tool, available from the Food and Nutrition Service, does not determine a household's SNAP eligibility, but can be used to give you an idea of how eligibility is determined.

    EBT means "electronic transfer of benefits".
    This is a way to ensure the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program without paper coupons.
    With a plastic card, which works like a debit card, recipients can use their services at the point of sale in retail outlets.
    Every Mississippi SNAP benefit family will receive an EBT card.
