The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides food assistance benefits that help low-income households buy the food they need for good health.
The amount of food aid benefits each household receives is based on the Lean Food Plan, a model diet plan that the U.S. Department of Agriculture uses to project food costs for one month for different household sizes.
According to the principles of SNAP, resources - such as bank accounts, cash property, personal property, vehicles, etc. - are taken into account when determining whether a household qualifies for SNAP.
Some resources are counted towards the allowable limit, while some resources are not counted toward the allowable limit.
The SNAP worker will explain which ones are counted.
The resources of people receiving public assistance, from the ISS and, in some places, general assistance are not counted within the limit.
To qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of Maine and fall into one of two groups:
- individuals with a current bank balance savings and checking account combined of less than $2,001
- individuals with a current bank balance savings and checking account combined of less than $3,001 who share a household with one or more individuals aged 60 or older or with a person with a disability a child, your spouse, a parent, or yourself.
