Madison County Department of Human Resources (DHR) Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Alabama is administered by the Food Assistance Division. Its purpose is to provide monthly benefits to low-income families/households so that they can purchase nutritious food at authorized grocery stores, farmers' markets and other retailers.

Individuals must apply for the SNAP program. An application must be filled out and all supporting documentation must be provided. When approved, SNAP benefits are issued monthly and put on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which looks just like a credit card. The benefit amount depends on number of individuals in household, income, expenses, and other factors pertinent to program guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Provide names for all individuals living in household
  • Provide proof of residence
  • Provide social security numbers
  • Provide proof of Citizenship and/or Alien Status
  • Provide proof of income, and expenses
  • Provide additional information as required

Special Note:
The Alabama Elderly Simplified Application Project (AESAP) is an application process for households where all the members are 60 years of age or older and have no earned income.

How can I apply for food stamps in Madison County?

  13. 2024-01-11 15:29:12

My phone was connected to wifi when I received my phone interview and my case worker hung up. I called to request a 2nd interview that afternoon when I had better service. I gave all my information and was told "I'll pass this to your caseworker and you'll hear back from them shortly". Two weeks later I hadn't heard or received anything in the mail, so I called and found out the person I talked to did not pass along my info like she said and my case worker denied my claim. I filled out a new application and I'm still waiting. I can never get in touch with anyone on the phone, every single number listed either just rings repeatedly or the number is dropped because "our systems are currently down". This is ridiculous.
