Division of Human & Community Services
The mission of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services' Division of Human And Community Services is to support the strengths of families and communities by promoting employment and providing the necessary assistance to help families and individuals meet basic needs and work to get out of poverty.
The Division provides cash assistance, job training, supplementary food assistance (previously food stamps), medical assistance, child care, reimbursements for food, nutrition training, energy assistance, meteorological assistance and other services to help families get out of poverty and move towards self-sufficiency.

Cash assistance is funded by a federal grant called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
The program provides monthly payments to low-income families and children who meet the standards for income and resource eligibility.
The Work Readiness Component provides employment and training services to people receiving financial assistance.
The Supplementary Assistance in Nutrition Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Labelling Program) provides benefits to eligible families to supplement their food budget and increase their ability to buy healthy food.
SNAP Nutrition Education, operated in conjunction with Montana State University, teaches participants how to use their food stamp benefits wisely.
