The mission of the Division of Human and Community Services of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services is to support the strengths of families and communities by promoting employment and providing the assistance needed to help families and individuals meet basic needs and move out of poverty.

The department provides cash assistance, vocational training, additional nutritional assistance formerly food stamps, Medicaid, childcare, meal reimbursement, nutritional training, energy assistance, weatherization, and other services to help families get out of poverty and toward self-help.
Cash assistance is funded by a federal grant called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program) provides eligible families with benefits to increase their food budget and improve their ability to purchase healthy food.
SNAP Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed), operated in conjunction with Montana State University, teaches participants how to use their food stamp benefits wisely.
