New Haven Department of Social Services Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is part of a federal nutrition program that helps low-income individuals purchase nutritious food. Individuals must apply for the program and provide all the required documentation.

The amount of benefit provided is based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. SNAP benefits are issued on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used just like a debit card at authorized grocery stores. Individuals can use SNAP befits to purchase eligible food items online at Amazon, Walmart, ShopRite and Aldi (via Instacart).

SNAP benefits CAN be used to purchase:
Fruits and vegetables
Meat, poultry, and fish
Dairy products
Breads and cereals
Other foods such as snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
Seeds and plants, which produce food for the household to eat

SNAP benefits CANNOT be used to purchase:
Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco
Vitamins, medicines, and supplements (if an item has a Supplement Facts label, it is considered a supplement and is not eligible for SNAP purchase)
Live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from the water, and animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from the store).

I did my renewal and received a call for a snap interview. My information barely changed. One little thing and I uploaded the documents they needed. I have a child they cut my snap off and I have no food. The women in the phone was so rude and hung up on me. Everything I uploaded online and sent in was on the site as reviewed. She told me she couldn't see anything. I asked her to look again. She did and found one document and told me she couldn't do anything for me. I was crying and stressed on the phone. She was yelling at me and wouldn't go back into the system to see if she could find the other document. Makes no sense. She hung up on me and I can't get in touch with anyone in the phone. This is craziness. Seriously.
