Department of Social and Social Services
The mission of the Department of Human and Community Services of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services is to support the strengths of families and communities by promoting employment and providing the necessary assistance to help families and communities meet their basic needs and work out of poverty.
The branch provides cash aid, employment training, additional food aid (formerly food stamps), Medicaid, childcare, meal reimbursement, food training, energy, meteorological and other services to help families get out of poverty and move to self-sufficiency.

The funding is funded by a federal block grant called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
The program provides monthly payments to low-income families and children who meet the standards of income and resources.
The Work Preparation Stream provides employment and training services to people who receive cash assistance.
The Supplementary Assistance in Nutrition Program, formerly the Food Labelling Program) provides benefits to eligible families to supplement their food budget and increase their ability to purchase healthy food.
Snap Nutrition Education, co-operated with Montana State University, teaches participants to use the benefits of food stamps wisely.
